Hi, I'm Angyl, a Melbourne-based tattoo artist specialising in large-scale blackwork and Japanese-inspired tattooing.
I believe a great tattoo should do more than fill space. It should complement the body, age with integrity, and become something you'll be proud to wear for a lifetime. Every project I create is custom designed with body flow, bold contrast, and longevity in mind, resulting in tattoos that feel considered, balanced, and uniquely yours.
While my work continues to evolve, my focus remains the same: creating timeless tattoos that are as enjoyable to wear decades from now as they are on the day they're finished.
Where It All Began:
My tattoo journey began in Auckland, New Zealand, where I grew up with a passion for creating. Long before I ever picked up a tattoo machine, I spent years drawing, painting, and pursuing a creative education with aspirations of becoming a 3D animator.
Although life eventually took me in a different direction, that foundation in art continues to influence every tattoo I design today. The principles of composition, movement, balance, and storytelling have always fascinated me, regardless of the medium.
It wasn't long before tattooing became the perfect combination of everything I loved, allowing me to create artwork that becomes a lasting part of someone's life.
Learning the Foundations
After beginning my tattoo journey, I was fortunate to complete my apprenticeship under Joe Brown at Nesian Tattoos in Auckland.
Learning within a Polynesian tattoo environment gave me an appreciation for much more than technical tattooing. It taught me the importance of body flow, composition, balance, cultural respect, and designing artwork that works with the natural shape of the body rather than against it.
Those lessons continue to influence my work every day. Even as my artistic direction has evolved, the understanding of movement and flow I developed during those early years remains one of the strongest foundations of my tattooing.
Finding My Own Direction
Seeking new opportunities and creative growth, I made the move to Melbourne, Australia.
It was here that I began exploring the styles that resonated most with me creatively, particularly Japanese-inspired tattooing and bold blackwork. Over time, I found myself naturally combining the principles I had learnt through Polynesian tattooing with the strength, composition, and storytelling found in Japanese art.
Today, my work reflects both influences, creating tattoos that emphasise bold design, confident contrast, and harmony with the body.
My Philosophy~
Every tattoo I create begins with one simple question:
How will this look not only today, but twenty years from now?
I'm passionate about creating tattoos that stand the test of time. Rather than relying on excessive detail or soft gradients alone, I focus on bold composition, strong contrast, and thoughtful use of solid black to create designs that remain clear, balanced, and visually impactful for years to come.
Equally important to me is the way a tattoo heals.
When someone chooses me as their artist, they're placing an incredible amount of trust in my hands. They're trusting me with their skin, their body, and something they'll carry for the rest of their life. I never take that responsibility lightly.
Having experienced tattoos myself, I've learnt that a beautiful design is only one part of a great tattoo. The way it heals matters just as much. A successful tattoo isn't just judged by how it looks on the day it's finished, but by how it heals and how it continues to look and feel for many years afterwards.
My goal is to tattoo with care and intention, respecting the skin throughout the process so that, once healed, the artwork feels like a natural part of you rather than unnecessary trauma to the skin. I strive for tattoos that heal cleanly, settle smoothly, and preserve the skin's natural texture wherever possible. That means working with the skin rather than against it, knowing when to push forward and when to ease back.
I also believe tattoos should enhance the natural shape of the body rather than simply occupy space. Whether it's a sleeve, backpiece, bodysuit, or ornamental composition, every element is designed to move with your anatomy and create a cohesive piece that feels intentional from every angle.
The projects I enjoy most are those built through collaboration. Working closely with my clients allows me to create custom artwork that reflects both their ideas and my artistic approach, resulting in tattoos that are deeply personal while remaining true to the style I've spent years developing.
Looking Forward..
Tattooing has given me the opportunity to connect with incredible people, continually challenge myself as an artist, and create work that will live on long after each session has ended.
As my style continues to evolve, my goal is to further refine the balance between blackwork, Japanese-inspired design, and body flow while taking on more large-scale projects that allow for complete artistic cohesion.
Looking ahead, I hope to continue travelling, guesting in studios, and drawing inspiration from different cultures, landscapes, and artists around the world. Every experience becomes another influence that shapes the way I approach my work, ensuring that I continue growing alongside the clients who trust me with their stories.
